Yes indeed...I would not be opposed to getting $500K a year for managing a SL presence......If only my PR budget had that kind of pot for social media. I wonder whether companies are budgeting for social media actually, it's an interesting thought. Since really it's about an investment of time rather than resources, it's likely that any investment is in using agencies to come up with creative strategies. Interesting. Might need to do some research...

Hi Mithu - thanks! I'm planning to post the week of August 27. Tom is out next week and gives me more time to formulate my ideas since the initial posting. By the way, I completed your online survey =)

Good luck with the research,
Cece

Hi there. I agree the definitions are still rather fluid. New media overlaps into social media; social media is powered by new media. But not all new media is social media. What categorizes social media is its requirement for more than one human opinion or interaction. Social media requires participation to earn its label. Viewing a video on a website with no interaction from other users and no ability to rate or favorite the clip? New media. Watching the video on YouTube, rating it, commenting, and reading other's comments? Social media.

Hi Simon
Thanks for the link. I actually came away from the conference really buying in to your viewpoint on facilitation - you're preaching to the converted :)

Where I fall down though (and actually the colleague I was with at the conference in June asked you about this) is we're working in an environment where people blogging on their own personal interests would have little or no interest at all to our stakeholders (which is very different to Sun..?) How - if at all - should PRs engage with their organization's community without providing something that's framed around what they want from that organization? Or am I just coming at this from the wrong perspective?

Cheers
